Participation

We believe participation is the active involvement of children and young people in experiences, opportunities, and decisions that affect their lives and their ability to fulfil their potential.

Participation has always been central to the work of Action for Children - for 140 years we have put children's voices at the heart of what we do.

This means that, among other things, we:

  • involve children and young people in recruitment and selection
  • develop high-quality and exciting arts initiatives
  • present children and young people's voices on issues that are important to them
  • involve children and young people in developing the services they receive

What participation means to us

We asked children and young people what participation means to them. They said participation means:

  • 'knowing I can'
  • 'being part of the picture'
  • 'sharing'
  • 'participation is laughter and fun'
  • 'being individual, being you'
  • 'fun'
  • 'brave'
  • 'can help you blossom'
  • 'finding out about myself'
  • 'being me'
  • 'feeling part of stuff'
