Legacy giving is an ideal way to help Action for Children. Your gift means we can do more for the children, young people and their families who most need our support.
The following people have all chosen to support our work by leaving a gift in their will. Some of them had connections with Action for Children when it was known as the National Children’s Home; others share with us a deep commitment to the work we do.
Mrs Gibbs
In 1917, the widow of Welsh Major J A Gibbs donated ‘Penarth’, a local hotel, to Action for Children in memory of her husband. As was Mrs Gibbs’ wish, the building was used to train boys for service at sea, in particular, those who lost their parents in the war.
For 91 years, we’ve used the building to provide vital services for children. In that time, many children have been given the support and opportunities to achieve their full potential.
Today Headlands – as it is now known – is a very special place. It is a residential and day school for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, like autism. There, these children get the specialist care and education they need to get the best start in life.
Dave Orford
“When I was six years old, my father became deputy head of Headlands School, Penarth – an approved school for boys. Many of the boys became my friends and we would play together after school.
I remember my friends from Headlands School and the opportunities they were given. I want Action for Children to be there for those who will need its services and help in the future.”
Morris Taylor
“Born in 1914 in a single parent family, I was sent to the national Children’s Home at Bramhope, then to Elswick Road in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I was christened Frank Morris, but when I arrived at Newcastle they said they already had a Frank, so they called me Morris – which has stuck ever since.
“I did all my schooling at Newcastle, and I was then sent to the Highbury Park office. I’ve kept in touch with Action for Children over the years and left them a gift in my will.”
Silvia Thomas
“In Action for Children, I found a way of expressing what I believed – of putting others, especially children, in the foreground. We have within us the power to make or to break, and to influence what that child is to become. To influence, too, how that child may enjoy life to the full.
“I’m often asked: ‘How can I help Action for Children?’ To me, perhaps the best way I can help is to leave money in my will. Believe it or not, I can make a mark into the future by leaving a legacy now!”
It truly is amazing what one person can do. After all, Headlands wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Mrs Gibbs. This one act of kindness has helped generations of vulnerable children. And it will continue to do so for many years to come.
