Six to 13 year old children are struggling with major problems that are often overlooked. Left unchecked, these problems can become lifelong struggles with issues such as crime, drug dependency or mental health concerns.

The years between six and 13 are crucial for children – particularly the most vulnerable.

Our experiences between six and 13 can shape our adult lives. The risks and challenges for the most vulnerable – problems with behaviour, drug or alcohol dependency, not doing well in school – can impact the rest of their lives.

Right help at the right time

Supporting six to 13 year olds is crucial. Children in and on the edge of care, disabled children and other young people with severe difficulties in their life need our help. The right assistance at the right time will mean they can handle the pressures of growing up in the UK today.

Overlooked and in-between

Public discussion about children and young people often focuses on young children or teenagers. Across many parts of the UK, support and services for six to 13 year olds have been overlooked. We can’t let the situation go unchallenged any longer.

We want:

• A cross-party 21-year vision for children and young people must be established in each nation of the UK, describing how both public services and public bodies which influence or regulate the commercial sector will work together to ensure children receive the support they need at all key stages and transitions in their lives.
• All children need at least one trusted adult who is there for them for as long as it takes, especially at times of transition. Agencies and professionals working with children and families must do more to recognise and safeguard the vital role of continuity, commitment and relationships built on trust in children's lives.
• Governments and media across the UK must begin a responsible debate on the way our young people are perceived and highlight young people's contribution to communities.
