Early intervention: Help government spend money wisely

The coalition government is preparing its first Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR), taking a close look at each department’s budget for the next three years.

This CSR, to be announced on 20 October 2010, is likely to be one of the most crucial rounds in recent years. It will set tough spending limits for every government department until 2015 and will look at the government’s role in providing public services, setting budgets and making spending cuts.

Early intervention: Making our voices heard

We have been working with politicians and decision-makers across the UK to make the case for investing in early intervention. From our Backing the Future report (2009), we showed that intervening as early as possible when children, young people and families face difficulties is both effective and can save the economy billions of pounds.

Nearly 600 candidates signed our early intervention pledge during the General Election and new MPs visited services in 25 key constituencies. Following this, forty five MPs (including Ministers from the Cabinet Office, Education and Home Office) attended our parliamentary event, The Smart Money, in June to learn about the benefits of early intervention for vulnerable children in their constituencies.

Taking Action: Talking to Treasury

Now there is an urgent need to make this early intervention argument louder than ever, to help the most vulnerable children, young people and their families.

At the end of July Action for Children wrote to the Chancellor with our submission to the current Comprehensive Spending Review.

Now you can strengthen our submission by emailing the Treasury too, helping to shape the government’s ideas and raise our key issues at this vital time.
