  • Early support for families could prevent child neglect

    A social services report has been leaked about the treatment of a 12-year-old boy who was so severely neglected by his mother and her partner, he was half-blinded. The boy and his sister were kept in a filthy, fly-infested house in Thornaby, near Stockton, Teesside. The review concludes that opportunities were missed by professionals to help the child. The couple who had the boy in their care both admitted cruelty in court last month. The child’s mother was jailed for two and-a-half-years and her partner for two years and two months.

    Acting executive director of operations Jan Leightley said: “More must be done to keep children out of the devastating, damaging situations of neglect that far too many experience every day.
