Ten-year-old Jake Phipps from Pershore in Worcestershire has set himself the gruelling challenge of cycling 660 miles from Land’s End to Dover this summer to raise money for leading children’s charity Action for Children – and has persuaded his mum Nic and family friend Philip Woods, from Stow on the Wold in Gloucestershire, to take part too.
“Team Bike with Jake” will be cycling right along Britain’s south coast during the first two weeks in August, carrying their tents and kits on their bikes, and staying as close as they can to the coastline.
They are aiming to raise as much sponsorship money as they can for Action for Children’s work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children. They set off on 2nd August and plan to arrive in Dover on August 19th.
Jake said: “I love cycling and I am doing this difficult challenge because I would like to raise lots of money for children who need help."
Jake’s progress can be followed at http://bikewithjake.blogspot.com/, and donations can be made at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/bikewithjake.
Jake said: “It's great having a blog page so that people can follow us and send us messages."
Jake has been training hard for months now. Not only is he riding his bike, occasionally into a few potholes, he is putting in a lot of hours in the gym. Jake is so enthusiastic and committed that, just to prove how fit and willing he is, he climbed Mount Snowdon together with his Scout Group in June.
Nic and Phillip have put in a lot of hard work helping Jake in his training. They have now got their tents prepared, campsites organised and training down to a fine art.
“It would be brilliant if other cyclists would like to join Team Bike with Jake along the route. We would love to see them," said Jake.
