Recruiting safely national training programme

19 October 2010

This autumn sees the launch of a new face-to-face national training programme designed to equip anyone recruiting into the children's workforce with the necessary knowledge and skills to recruit staff and volunteers safely.

The Recruiting Safely National Training Programme (RSNTP) is part of a wider suite of training and resources developed by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC), including the publication 'Recruiting Safely; guidance to help keep children and young people safe' (CWDC, 2009) and the Recruiting Safely Online Training.

Action for Children is leading a consortium including The Lucy Faithfull Foundation and Manchester Metropolitan University to deliver the programme on behalf of CWDC. The courses are available across England1 and will be interactive and multimodal addressing a range of learning styles. Participants will develop and demonstrate competence through trainer-led discussion, presentation, learning and case studies. Successful completion is recognised through a certificate by CWDC valid for five years.

Justin Humphreys, Programme Director for RSNTP at Action for Children, said: "This is a very exciting time to be launching such a valuable training programme that spans the wider children's workforce. Our aim is to ensure that the training is accessible to as many people as need it over the coming months. We are especially hoping that smaller voluntary organisations will be able to come onto the courses around the country so that we can support them with this crucial task of recruiting safely."

Deirdre Quill, Director of Early Intervention and Prevention at CWDC, said: "Safer recruitment training is important for all recruiters in the children and young people's workforce to undertake. It's an important tool in helping protect children and young people from people who are unsuitable for such positions of trust.

"We are delighted that our safer recruitment training will be available to everyone across England through this face-to-face programme. I urge anyone who recruits people to work with children and young people, whether in the private, public or voluntary sectors, to access the courses."

The one-day courses will run on a frequent basis from November 2010. Further information about the Recruiting Safely National Training Programme can be accessed via the CWDC website at www.cwdcouncil.org.uk/safeguarding/safer-recruitment or via email to recruiting.safely@actionforchildren.org.uk.
