Organisational culture is key to protecting vulnerable children and young people from abuse
23 October 2012
With the recent media interest in how
to keep children and young people safe from
abuse, Action for Children has been giving advice on best practice and organisational
culture.
Director of Practice Improvement David
Derbyshire told CNN: 'Selection and recruitment is
key; this is the most important stage of ensuring
you've got a person suited to the job. Organisations also need to
have a clear code of conduct in place. Staff need to
know what is and isn't appropriate
behaviour.
'It is essential to be sensitive and
responsive to what children and young people say. There should be
ways to report concerns and make complaints if necessary, as well
as robust whistle-blowing procedures for other members
of staff if they are concerned their complaints aren't being
listened to.'
Head of Safeguarding Shaun Kelly told BBC Radio
Manchester: 'Workplace culture is very important.
Everyone needs to know that it isn't acceptable to display
inappropriate behaviour.'
