Teenage pregnancy
Children born to teenage parents are more likely to have poor
life outcomes. Too many teenage mothers suffer physical, mental and
emotional health problems. All too often teenage parent families
live in poverty. We help them achieve better outcomes - for
themselves and for their children.
Helping teenage mums
Our services support young mums to develop the skills and
confidence they need to live independently. They might need help
with budgeting, cooking, debt, benefits, self-esteem, confidence,
assertiveness, and re-housing. We're also committed to giving them
the best opportunities in
education, training and employment.
But it's not just about the support we can give directly. We help
these young women access other specialist services, so they get the
full range of support to really make a difference for them, for
their children and for their families.
Taking a lead role
Action for Children's Gabriel Court takes a lead role in Rochdale's
Teenage Pregnancy Strategy Group, overseeing performance and
ensuring a multi-agency strategic approach to driving down levels
of teenage conceptions in the district. Rochdale has seen a
substantial reduction of 11.3% in their teenage pregnancy rates
from 1998-2008; with 46% of these young mums in employment,
education and training, higher than the national average of
29%.
