Action for Children Emotional Wellbeing Project in Easington, County Durham, is a needs led service which aims to provide counselling intervention to vulnerable children and young people, within an education and community setting.

The role

We are looking for both trainee and newly qualified Volunteers, who may be seeking to increase clinical practice hours, to help provide counselling support to children and young people both in the community and within an educational setting, and to work alongside partner agencies in providing a holistic client centred care package. The Volunteer Counsellor will be placed in venues alongside a qualified Counsellor and have an agreed placement contract in line with BACP/UKCP guidance.

Responsibilities will include:
  • To work alongside qualified counsellor to facilitate drop ins.
  • Providing an individual needs led counselling service for children and young people, in a community or educational setting, according to your skills. This could include working in both individual and group settings.
  • To support the development of assessment tools in order to evaluate the work, including pre and post assessment questionnaires.
  • To provide ongoing reviews and evaluations with young people.
  • Developing an understanding of Action for Children Standards and Procedures.
  • Attending monthly meeting and supervision sessions with the Project Coordinator, who will in turn provide support and guidance.
  • Attending regular clinical supervision sessions. This will be provided by Action for Children.
  • Maintaining ongoing case records, in line with Action for Children guidelines.
  • To maintain the confidentiality of all information to which you may be exposed whilst serving with Action for Children as a Volunteer.
  • To adhere to relevant Action for Children’s policies, standards and procedures.
  • To maintain and help promote, where appropriate, the reputation of Action for Children.

Training and support

As an Action for Children volunteer, you would get a full induction into the work of Action for Children and our values. For this particular role, you will also be given training in Action for Children’s safeguarding procedures for children and young people, personal safety and equality and diversity. In addition you will have access to a range of training, relevant and appropriate to the role of Counsellor Volunteer.
