More information

Action for Children are launching an exciting new project to match volunteers to disabled young people aged between ten and eighteen based in Croydon.

We want you to volunteer to befriend a young person -

This will involve:

  • Weekly or fortnightly contacts (for 3 or more hours) with children and young people
  • Accompanying the young person to undertake activities, e.g. Cinema trips, cycle rides, ten pin bowling and anything you are both up for!
  • Providing emotional and practical support where appropriate
  • Assisting the young person to participate in mainstream activities within the community and helping them work towards making decisions about their future service needs
  • Completing evaluation forms for each visit

We hope that over time a strong and supportive relationship would be built up between you and the young person.

There would be two days of training given which we hope to run towards the end of July this year. If we are then able to successfully match you to a young person, we will give you further training in supporting the needs relating to your young person.

Ongoing support and advice will be available to you throughout your match, and we will be running sessions for you to share your experiences with other befrienders on an ongoing basis. We would also help you with ideas for things to do in Croydon with your matched young person.

The children will be based in the Croydon area, so being able to get to the area will be essential for volunteers.
