Working with children and their parents has helped the 18-year-old make decisions about her career, as well as improving her confidence.

“I always wanted to be a social worker, but now I want to be a care worker, either with children or elderly people.

Caitlyn volunteers at a Stay and Play group for one morning a week where she helps staff get the room set up, prepares fruit for the children’s mid-morning snack, interacts with children as they play and talks and listens to their parents.

“On my first day I felt like crying because I was so nervous about working with the children. But the staff really made me feel welcome and now I feel like part of the team."

"Since volunteering for Action for Children I’ve seen that it’s nice to interact with people and to make people smile. My mum always says to me, ‘Your smile to one person can make that person’s day’"

“I would 100 per cent recommend volunteering to others. It’s opened up my eyes so much. It’s been great getting to know the children and parents and it’s nice when I pass them on the street and they recognise me. It’s also brought out the inner child in me and I enjoy getting involved. Overall it’s been brilliant.”
