"I’m Ellen, and as well as volunteering as an Events Assistant at Action for Children Scotland, I study Festival and Events Management at Edinburgh’s Napier University. I work with the events team in Scotland in their Glasgow office, and assist with organising different fundraising events. My job includes everything from securing prizes for the events, emailing participants, committee members etc., dealing with financial aspects of the event too.

There are several reasons why I wanted to be a volunteer - it gives me the opportunity to learn more about the organising of events, and the variety and size of the events AFC put on in Scotland is giving me great experience. It especially feels good to know that the work I am doing, and the money that we raise, go to such a good cause.

The most memorable moments for me has been the days of the events, when it all comes together and all the guest seems to be enjoying themselves. It is always exciting to see how much money is raised by the end of the night. It is also really powerful when someone who is themselves supported by an AFC service, or have a family member that is, talks at the events and tells their story…

I do feel part of the organisation as a whole, but it’s really good to celebrate Volunteers’ Week, to increase the focus on volunteering, and make volunteers feel important."
