Just a year after being formed, the Action for Children legal team has been nominated for Law Society Excellence Awards in two categories.

While the nominations are a mark of prestige in themselves, they also reflect the hard work that takes place behind the scenes.

We’re delighted to announce the team has secured a nomination for Excellence In-house (a brand new category this year), while Sophia Dirir, Head of Legal Services, has been nominated for Solicitor of the Year – In-house.

What do the awards celebrate?

The Law Society’s Excellence In-house award recognises legal innovation, leadership and outstanding achievement in teams who have used these skills to benefit their organisations. Solicitor of the Year – In-house recognises excellence and outstanding achievement by an individual solicitor working in house.

Sophia, pictured above, comments: "It is a real honour for the Action for Children Legal team to be recognised and shortlisted for such a prestigious award, particularly since we are such a new team and have only  been fully operational  for 12 months." She adds, "The award is a fantastic reflection of the work and commitment the team provide to the Charity on a day to day basis, of which I am very proud. It is also thanks to Richard Hood, Director of Governance, for his kind nomination and support in making the legal team a reality."

What does the legal team work on?

The in house legal function supports Action for Children in a wide variety of areas, Sophia comments: "This includes Employment, Child Protection, Data Protection, Governance and Regulatory, Contract Management and Intellectual Property to include just a few…"

The team also deals with everything from securing and signing-off large contracts to gaining work experience for young people/ service users, and has a people- and service-led approach.

""We pride ourselves in working closely with internal clients so that we can be responsive to their needs. Being on hand and approachable to clients often allows us to provide an early and timely input of advice that can nip an issue in the bud rather than allowing it grow into something much bigger.”"

What about the highlights?

Sophia says: "Our highlights this year include being shortlisted for this award, delivering significant savings to the organisation ... and delivering an improved service to our colleagues to serve the organisation’s objectives. It is gratifying to know that any savings we achieve through smarter working, mean that more money can directed towards our charity purpose of changing the lives of disadvantaged young people. More recently, the legal team have enjoyed the challenge of supporting the wider organisation in the transfer of £15 million of services from a large Children’s Charity within the sector. This project, whilst hard work and hectic, was really inspiring to work collaboratively alongside our colleagues across different sectors of the organisation to and achieve a successful outcome, whilst also evidencing the integration of the Legal function in to the wider organisation."
