Great volunteering ideas that you can share with your friends

Whatever your skills and experience, and however much time you can offer, we have a volunteering opportunity for you and your friends. You’ll get support and training if you need it, and you'll make a real difference.

Parent champions

If you're a parent with positive experience of using childcare in your local area, you could use your experience to help parents in your community.

Simran volunteers with us once a week. She provides an advocacy service for parents. She works especially with parents who have children with disabilities as one of her daughters has a learning disability. Simran helps them apply for benefits. She helps with form-filling and making phone calls. This support is invaluable to those parents who don’t have English as a first language.

We want to ensure parents are accessing:

  • their entitlement to free early education for two-year-olds
  • their local and home learning services

Simran tells parents about charities that can help with housing issues and debt, such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB), which she also volunteers for.

"Every other Tuesday I cover a baby clinic which I enjoy, I talk to the parents while they wait to be seen by the Health Visitors. I explain what Action for Children provides and what children’s groups are available locally"

From help with social media to assisting at stay-and-play sessions, our 200 children's centres across the UK need a bit of extra help with everyday tasks.

Sandra worked for over 30 years as an administrator. After she retired, she found she missed the office banter.

She got in touch with us and now supports one of our fundraising teams in the Midlands.

Find out what services and support groups are in your area and get involved. Volunteers can make a huge difference to services, whatever your skills.

"I love coming into the office, not knowing what I will be doing, could be counting money, wrapping raffle prizes, spreadsheet, mail merges, posters, photocopying, making telephone calls, anything at all."

We need volunteers who can help out at our events across the UK - from the iconic London Marathon to our countrywide sleepout event Byte Night - and we'd love it if you could join our team!

Event volunteering is a great way to:

  • get events experience and build your cv
  • meet lots of interesting people
  • develop skills such as communication, customer service, event organisation
  • experience a wide range of exciting events

Ellen volunteers in our Glasgow office. She supports the fundraising team. Her jobs includes everything from securing prizes for the events, emailing participants, committee members etc., dealing with financial aspects of the event too.

"The variety and size of the events AfC put on in Scotland is giving me great experience. It especially feels good to know that the work I am doing, and the money that we raise, go to such a good cause."

Employee Supported Volunteering

You and your co-workers could help a centre near you by doing a practical task, like gardening, painting or transforming a therapy room.

Staff from Marks & Spencer created a sensory garden for one of our children's centres in Swansea.

By getting involved in Employee Supported Volunteering (ESV) your company could:

  • increase staff commitment, motivation and morale
  • develop staff skills
  • promote understanding and respect between co-workers
  • generate creative approaches to problem-solving
  • improve its reputation

All whilst making a positive difference to the life of a vulnerable child or young person.

"It was very interesting to transform the outdoor play area garden at Stepping Stones into a multi-sensory garden. It was an amazing outcome to an amazing Centre."
