Whatever your skills or experience is and however much time you have to offer with your busy schedule, odds are, there is a volunteering opportunity for you in your area. Volunteering as a student can help create so much positive change. You can help make a difference and take social action in your community as well as tackle issues that you care about – all while improving the lives of those around you. Whether you are just beginning university or trying to wrap your head around final year deadlines, there are so many benefits to volunteering as a student.

Benefits

1. It can help give you a steady routine. Sometimes, your routine can be unpredictable while you are studying. Volunteering can be a great way to help give you a balanced routine.
2. It can allow you to meet others from different places and backgrounds. Meeting people in university can be scary, especially if you’re away from home. Volunteering for a cause that you are passionate about can allow you to meet like-minded individuals who care about some of the same things you do.
3. It can offer you a range of new skills. Something that can’t be denied, no matter how hard we try, is the fact that job-searching is something a lot of us begin thinking about during our time at university. Volunteering can help you to obtain a whole new set of skills from organising sporting events to using various social media platforms.
4. It can help you find a career or field that you particularly enjoy. With all your new skills learned as a student volunteer, you can also use volunteering to find what career you might be interested in for the future. With all the different opportunities available, you could find interests that you didn’t realise you had before.
5. It can become a stress-free outlet. The time you are studying can be a difficult time for your mental health when you find yourself feeling very stressed with the various things you have on your plate. Volunteering can be a great way to get out of your academic headspace and help others. Sometimes when you are overwhelmed, this can be the best type of outlet.
