Children love to help in the kitchen and these recipes are great ones for them to try.

Where possible, involve your child and make it a fun, special time activity.  This will help with your ‘fussy eaters’ because a child is much more likely to eat what they have made. Remember, make it FUN!

Wigan Parental Outreach have given us their 3 favourite recipes to make with toddlers. Why not try these at home with your little ones?

Cheesy mash and beans

A great family favourite, it doesn’t take long to prepare or cook. (from netmums recipes)

What you’ll need:

Potatoes – white potatoes are great but sweet potatoes can be a great and bright alternative
Butter/Margarine
Milk
Cheddar

  1. Peel your potatoes and cut them into small chunks
  2. Boil the potatoes in a saucepan of water – the water should completely cover the potatoes
  3. After 20 minutes, test the potatoes with a fork, if they fall back into the saucepan then they’re done!
  4. Drain the water from the saucepan
  5. Mash the potato with a beater or a fork with the milk, butter and cheddar
  6. Heat the beans either on the hob for 5 minutes or in the microwave for 2 minutes
pizza

Make your own pizza

What you'll need:

Base – you can use pre-made pizza bases,part-bake bread or pitta bread for this
Tomato puree
Toppings – anything you like!

  1. Spread the tomato puree on your base
  2. Add whatever toppings you and your child like
  3. Grill for 10 minutes

Toppings can include grated cheese, chopped onion, chopped peppers, chopped tomatoes, broccoli florets, sliced mushrooms, tinned sweetcorn, tuna, ham, cooked chicken.

Tuna and sweetcorn jacket/baked potato

What you'll need:

1 tin of tuna (in spring water)
1 tin of sweetcorn
Mayonnaise
Potato – white potatoes are traditional but sweet potatoes also work well

  1. Wash your potato and prick them with a fork. If you’ve got time you can bake your potatoes in the oven – it takes about an hour otherwise you can microwave it for 15 minutes.
  2. Once cooked, cut the potato in half and gently mash the middle and leave the potato to stand for a few minutes until it cools
  3. Mix together the tuna, sweetcorn and mayonnaise in a bowl, spoon the mix on top of the potato
fruit

Bonus suggestion – don’t forget dessert, why not finish off with a lovely fruity kebab.

You can use any fruit here, these are just suggestions:

Grapes – white and red
Strawberries
Mango
Blueberries
Raspberries
Satsumas
