Valentine’s Day is often known for chocolates, roses, romance and love. However, it’s also the perfect opportunity to celebrate love as a family and make your own fun traditions.

If you are a parent looking for ways to spend this Valentine’s Day, here are some ideas for how you can have a fun day celebrating with your young ones and family, expressing your appreciation for one another and learning that this day can be about more than just candy and fancy flowers.

Make Valentine’s themed foods

Everyone loves a good theme. A great way to start your happy day is to make pink pancakes! Here is a great recipe that your kids can join in on before they start their day or after they come home from school.

Hint* If you aren’t comfortable using food colouring, beetroot juice makes for a great natural food colouring and is not too strong in taste.

Make Valentine’s cards

Get artsy with your little ones and make simple Valentine’s cards. You can use what you have, or go to the store and have them pick up the supplies that they want to use! These can be used to give to others or kept to decorate their rooms.

Do a ‘random act of kindness’

What’s a better way to show your love and appreciation than to be kind to others? Spending the day by doing nice things for others who might have lost a loved one or feel particularly lonely on days like this will make their days brighter and be sure to put a smile on their face.

Do something special for your kids

Valentine’s is a perfect day to make everyone feel special and valued. Do something that you don’t usually do for your children to make them feel a little extra special. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, it can be as simple as playing their favourite board game with them or decorating the house with kind notes for them.

Let them know they are loved

It is easy to take the ones that we love for granted. This Valentine’s Day express your love to your little ones and family, in whatever way that you show it - whether that be with words, cuddles, gift-giving or just by spending time with them. It is important to remind ourselves to make sure the people we love know just how special they are to us.
