This week, the Home Affairs Committee published a report urging the Government to widen it's forthcoming bill to be a Violence against Women and Girls and Domestic Abuse Bill.

The report identifies persistent problems with lack of refuge and advice support for victims, weaknesses in the police and court response, and inadequate action to prevent abuse of all kinds. It calls for stronger action on what is one of the most common and the most dangerous crimes we face.

Our Director of Policy and Campaigns, Imran Hussain responded:

"Today’s report makes clear that children are too often the forgotten victims of domestic abuse. The forthcoming Domestic Abuse Bill must put children at its heart or risk failing to bring about fundamental change in the help we provide victims.

"Every day at Action for Children we see the terrible impact on children caught up in domestic abuse and the emotional scars which can work against them for the rest of their lives. Violence in the home can cause so much stress and trauma that children’s brains can develop differently, and they struggle to understand what healthy relationships look like.

"We're pleased MPs on the Committee have listened to us and understand that to give children and families the chance to recover from this deep and lasting trauma and go on to lead normal, happy lives, the government has to guarantee specialist services, including refuges.

"The government is trying to do good things with the Domestic Abuse Bill, and we look forward to working with ministers to strengthen the legislation."
