Nikki and Adam have four daughters all under the age of 10. Adam, 30, was diagnosed with osteoarthritis during their pregnancy with their youngest daughter Carly, now 2, leaving him unable to work. Nikki had to quit her job to support the family full-time.

Nikki said: “When we found out about Adam, the hospital said there was nothing they could do as he was so young. It meant that neither of us were working and we were relying on benefits which was a shock to the system."

The family quickly adjusted to these changes and had become financially stable before the Coronavirus pandemic. They had been receiving support from Action for Children for their eldest daughter who had been helping to care for her younger siblings.

"We managed to get by and would make every penny stretch. The kids were able to get free meals at school and they never went without"

However, Nikki and her family were thrown into disarray when Coronavirus sent the UK into lockdown.

“My wee one got sick and we were told to isolate for 14 days. That was the first thing. When we got out of isolating, we then had to shop locally because we couldn’t afford fuel to drive to the nearest supermarket six miles away. But that was really expensive too. We were getting the bare essentials but nothing else."

When the family's support worker realised the struggle they were facing, she applied for the emergency fund on their behalf.

Nikki said: “I got a message from our support worker saying she had been granted £250 to help us with the electric bills, food shops and fuel. It was so overwhelming when I got it. I remember reading the message and I just broke down.”

“I was just so overwhelmed. It was amazing to know there was that support all the time. Originally Action for Children had been supporting Katelynn, and they had done so much. She had become so much happier and confident. But they didn’t stop there, they made the support about the whole family. I don’t know what would’ve happened without them.”

Coronavirus has thrown all our lives, our communities and the UK into an unprecedented crisis.
