Staying awake overnight can have a negative impact on your body, mentally and physically. You should only do this challenge for one night

Please do not participate in this activity if you have a health condition that may be exacerbated by a lack of sleep. It’s also not recommended that you take part in the challenge if you need to work or perform activity that will require high levels of concentration the following day, such as operating machinery or driving a long way.

If you are taking part in Boycott Your Bed, here are some tips to help you through safely:

Before you begin the challenge

  • Rest up and ensure you have had a good night sleep before taking part.
  • Hydration is key. Drink the recommended daily intake of water to help with your energy levels.
  • Tell everyone that you are Boycotting Your Bed! Getting support and encouragement from friends and family will give you a well-deserved boost.
  • Pick a buddy. It is a good idea to have a friend or family member that can act as a buddy throughout the challenge and check in on you and how you're doing.

During your night of the challenge

  • Again, hydration is key. Drinking enough water can give your energy a boost just when you need it.
  • Fuel from food will also keep you going. Avoid sugary foods that will give you a temporary boost but can make you crash soon afterwards.
  • Keep moving! Get up and walk around every hour to give yourself a natural boost. Try a morning walk or maybe some gentle yoga to keep you going.
  • Keep in touch. Regularly updating someone about your progress will help to keep you motivated and ensure someone knows what you're up to.

The morning after

  • Take a shower, or even splashing some cool water on your face can help you feel more awake.
  • Find some bright lights and show your brain that it’s daytime.
  • Let someone know how you got on. Check in with your buddy and let them know how you're feeling or post on social media to let your sponsors know how the challenge has gone.

If you are concerned for your welfare, or feel unwell, at any point during the challenge, please discontinue your challenge and seek help.
