As well as long-term, full commitment fostering, there are foster carers who provide planned breaks for other foster carers, usually just one weekend a month.

This may be something you would consider alongside your full-time job. We can help you decide if this type of fostering arrangement works best for you.

The impact of planned breaks

Providing cover during holidays and weekends gives full-time carers the chance to recharge their batteries and enables children to have new experiences and develop new relationships. You will get to know different young people, so if you're good at building relationships, this could be for you. It would involve you looking after a child or young person for a few days, usually on a regular basis and planned in advance. This is a flexible arrangement and can be worked around your other commitments and availability.

It’s also a great way for people considering long-term fostering to get hands-on experience before committing fully to a long-term arrangement.

How Action for Children Fostering will help

You will still be provided with the same high level of support, training and resources as all of our other foster carers. Find out about our support and training.
