An Appropriate Adult in Age Assessments is a person independent of the Local Authority who ensures that a young person is fully included in a fair age assessment process when their age is being disputed.

Action for Children provide high quality, experienced, and trained Appropriate Adults who work collaboratively with local authorities to achieve the best possible outcomes for children and young people.

Our Appropriate Adults work under the Age Assessment Guidance produced by the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS) and will:

  • Support the young person to understand the questions;
  • Ensure the young person is treated fairly;
  • Safeguard the young person’s welfare throughout the process;
  • Ensure the assessment in child-friendly, clear, and transparent;
  • Make a written record of the assessment.
