Welcome to Talgarth!
Talgarth is a three-bedroom residential home situated just outside the grounds of Headlands Residential School in the heart of Penarth. Our home is designed to provide a safe, nurturing, and child-centred environment where emotional well-being, personal growth, and recovery are prioritised.
What's it like here?
The home has three bedrooms for the young people, one with an en-suite and a young person’s bathroom upstairs. It has lounge diner, kitchen, laundry room and games room on the middle floor. There is a sleeping in room, and sleeping room and office, and staff bathroom on the lower floor. There is a grassy garden area with a trampoline to the front of the home, and a driveway to the rear of the home.

The living space offers a homely lounge and dining area, complemented by a games room and a separate kitchen, creating opportunities for shared experiences and a sense of belonging. The bathroom includes both a bathtub and overhead shower, promoting choice and comfort in daily routines. One of the young person’s bedrooms features an en-suite, supporting privacy and dignity in self-care.
Outdoor spaces include gardens to the front and rear of the home, with a trampoline and table to encourage play, connection with nature, and seasonal activities that build emotional resilience. In addition, the young person benefits from access to the park area within the school grounds, providing opportunities for creative expression and physical activity during both school and home time.
Our ethos is rooted in therapeutic relationships and co-production. We actively involve the young person in decisions about décor, meal planning, and activities, fostering independence, mastery, and a sense of control. This collaborative approach ensures care is personalised, culturally sensitive, and aligned with the principles of voice, choice, and empowerment.
By creating a warm, inclusive, and structured environment, Talgarth promotes safety, trust, and empowerment, key components of trauma-informed care. Our goal is to enable every child to thrive, develop resilience, and build positive relationships that support long-term well-being.

How to refer
Our referral process consists of three stages that ensure we facilitate a positive experiencing and matching process. Our priority is providing a home for young people who can best benefit from what we offer here.
Stage 1
The referral information is gathered and assessed by the admissions panel to decide if the young person’s needs can potentially be met.
Stage 2
Further information is collected through visits and feedback from residential and school teams before the panel reviews suitability again.
Stage 3
The young person and family attend a visit, and a final decision is made about progressing to an overnight stay.
