Paul Carberry, CEO of Action for Children, said:

“While there is much to welcome from this Spending Review, big questions remain over decisions affecting the lives of millions of vulnerable children.

“Overdue investment in social housing, expanding free school meals and the new Crisis and Resilience Fund will all help to address child poverty.

“Additional funding for children’s social care is something we’ve long called for and a vital step towards supporting families, ensuring that every child has a safe and happy place to call home.

"However, if this government is to succeed in its bold ambition to drive down the UK’s shamefully high levels of child poverty, it must go further.

“The Child Poverty Strategy this autumn must rebuild our inadequate social security system, starting with scrapping the two-child limit and benefits cap.

“Detail is lacking over the expansion of the Family Hubs programme, which needs to be backed by a specific package of funding so that all families in England can access the support these services provide, especially those experiencing poverty and disadvantage.”
