Action for Children responds to the Office of National Statistics release on child abuse in England and Wales

Action for Children’s director of policy and campaigns, Imran Hussain, said: 

“Today’s figures are shocking but with increasing numbers of children going into care after facing the trauma of issues such as abuse and neglect, things could get even worse.

“The emotional scars of child abuse can last a lifetime with sufferers more likely to experience domestic abuse as an adult, as well as long-term mental health problems as they struggle to cope with the devastating experiences they’ve had as a child.

“We know from our own services that when children are given support early it can make the world of difference. Young people suffering from abuse must be able to access the help they need as soon as possible - not only to stop the abuse in its tracks but also to deal with the impacts before they lead to a lifetime overshadowed by crisis. The new government must bring in a National Childhood Strategy, with proper funding for children’s services, to give all children the chance at a safe and happy childhood.”
