Life in Focus: A photographic celebration of young carers

Are you a young carer in the UK? Access free photography workshops and share your experience with the Royal Photographic Society and Action for Children

If you’re a young person caring for a parent, sibling or someone else in your family, it can be a big responsibility at a young age. It comes with a great sense of pride and admiration – however you may sometimes be experiencing feelings of loneliness, and stress.

That’s why it’s important that you take time out for yourself to do something you enjoy for your own mental health and wellbeing.

Photography can help you capture your thoughts and emotions, interests and experiences. Show off what makes you unique. You’ll have the chance to learn new things and show what’s important to you.

Life in Focus is open to young carers across the UK aged 10–18.

You don’t have to be a photographer, you don’t have to come in with ideas ready to go. This is a chance to learn something new and have some fun along the way.

So, if you want to learn a whole new skill or you’ve already mastered the basics, there will be something for everyone.

What sort of photography could I do?

We are asking you to take photographs of what’s important to you in your everyday life, and we’d love to see them!

What’s more, you’ll have the chance to submit your photographs. Selected entries will be part of a nationwide exhibition, Young Carers - A Life in Focus.

How do I take part?

Register now on the Royal Photographic Society website. You just need to share your email address and you’ll get sent everything you need to take part.

More support for young carers

Action for Children works with young carers across the UK. We help them balance their caring responsibilities with being a child.

One of the ways we do that is with Sidekick. This is a confidential and anonymous SMS service for young carers aged 13-18.

You can text Sidekick any time, about anything that's bothering you as a young carer. We'll find you the answer you need and text you back within 24 hours.
