The hidden cost of Christmas

Meet the Rutter family.

The Rutter family talk about how Action for Children helped them last Christmas

Why Christmas is harder for some than others

For families like the Rutter family, budgets are tight. And Christmas costs put families under pressure. Mum, Shelley, created what she calls a 'budget binder' to combat the rising costs of food, and keep strict control of their spending.

Shelley and her husband, Ethan, have four children: Brooke, 12, seven-year-old Sophia, and twins Harry and Oliver are five. With the twins' birthday arriving just a month after Christmas, it's a particularly expensive time of year for them.

The children absolutely love Christmas morning. Playing with their new toys is Harry and Oliver’s favourite part and Brooke loves eating Christmas food. None of that would be possible without our careful budgeting. We’re not a family who are able to spoil our children.

The cost of living crisis has increased financial pressure for many, and during the holidays it becomes more difficult to make money stretch.

Thanks to the support of people like you and Nationwide, our Secret Santa campaign meant we were able to bring some festive magic to the Rutter home last Christmas.

Christmas with the Rutter family

Last Christmas, an Action for Children service worker brought gifts to the Rutter family's home for their children.

Harry and Oliver had some toy dinosaurs, a football, and colouring books to open on Christmas morning. For their sisters, Sophia received Barbie dolls, and the oldest Brooke got a Bluetooth speaker and some body wash.

Shelley reflected on how grateful they all were for the surprise.

All the children were so happy and excited. It was lovely to see the joy on their faces during Christmas. They were so grateful for the presents that Action for Children provided and would repeatedly say ‘thank you’ after unwrapping everything.
